History of Camp Films

Camp Films has a bright past and even brighter future in film production sollutions. Begun in 1992, the ironic name evokes Camp Coffee, post-colonialism, campness, outward bounds adventure and Roman fortification. It is also the surname name of the Producer and is either of Romany Gipsy origin 'Scamp' or of Dutch Belgian Origin 'Descamps' The Film Company name is perhaps 10% vanity and 10% ironic but reflects a dual 100% commitment to egalitarian profesional product and cutting edge flamboyant entertainment with social conscience. It is also short and sweet.

Camp Films is committed to a truly Independent moving image production. We believe in a fully developed realisation of individual 'director's vision'. This means commissioning film writing suited to low budget production and planning the shoot on set in the weeks prior to shooting with heads of department, maximising the potential of the writing. Directors are fully supported at every stage to ensure maximum communication between departments and the most effective production route and creative solutions.

We have built up considerable expertise in ensuring the best product for talented first time directors, and have given many aspiring and well known sheffield directors and film professionals their introduction to the Industry. We believe in building a South Yorkshire based film community of effecive professionals and head of department teams who can practice continuity effectiveness from one film to the next.

The Sheffield Scene since 1992 has practiced this cross pollenation of film crews, leading to low budget feature production and the build up of a critical mass of expertise in the city which has made Sheffield's higher profile as a centre for film making possible.

Camp Films has always enjoyed the unconventional approach to winning audiences; favouring television outlets in the past to the festival route. Although this has enabled films costing as little as six hundred pounds to reach 2.5 million plus audiences we realise that we need to conitinue acheiving international festivals recognition in Europe and America. The Profile of Camp Films directors will continue to grow as we develop the distribution end of the business via internet and international film festival curcuit. See Links.

Malcolm Camp Film Maker Profile

Malcolm got his grounding in time based production at an exhibition design company in Norwich. After a degree in culture, semitotics and film history in Sheffield, He was mentored by commercials director Keith Godman of RSA Associates fame on a drama and documentary production in the south east. Malcolm went on to The Northern Media school in Sheffield, where opportunities for aspiring producers were plentiful. The Sheffield Film Making scene in the 90s was boyant with film making at every level peaking around the time of the full Monty in 1996. After spending perhaps a little too long in this exciting, tough but financially limited area, Camp Films is in position to find its first feature project or continue making world beating shorts in the most efficient and beautiful way possible.
